Close your eyes and picture the biggest pig you can imagine. Now bigger. Bigger still.
Is this pig in your head six feet tall? Eleven feet long? The size of a bison? Well, thatâs what the ancient ancestor Dinohyus (the Latin name for âterrible pigâ) looked like as it plowed its way around North America forty million years ago.
But that was a really long time ago. The more recent ancestor of todayâs pig is the wild boar that once roamed through the forests of Asia, Europe, and North Africa.
The snout is the pigâs most prized feature, a sensitive sniffer and powerful tool all in one.
Hogs use their snouts to smell out goodies and root around, digging in the dirt for food.
